What can snow do for us?

As adults, snow can influence our mood in many ways, both positively and negatively, depending on various factors such as our previous experience or different circumstances.

On the one hand, snow can be a source of stress for those who have to clear it or travel in these conditions, and on the other hand, the white landscape can induce a state of calm and inner peace. In addition, when snow is associated with fond childhood memories, it can evoke feelings of joy or wonder.

Children tend to live more in the present, and playing in the snow can have several benefits:

  • spending more time outdoors and having the opportunity to engage in more physical activity can have a positive effect on their physical and mental health and can be beneficial for their overall development

  • snow can stimulate their sense of touch, hearing, and smell because it offers children rich sensory experiences: it is cold, has a specific texture, turns into water when it melts, and makes a specific sound when they walk on it

  • activities such as making snowballs or a snowman stimulate their imagination and creativity

  • it gives them the opportunity to interact with other children, learn about cooperation, share with others, develop teamwork skills, thus contributing to their social development

  • last but not least, they can create beautiful memories that will stay with them for a lifetime

Adults who also enjoy snow can feel its beneficial effects on their health, ranging from the positive effects of physical activity, increased endurance, and reduced harmful effects of stress, to connecting with their inner child, mindfulness, or simply enjoying the moment. All of these can contribute to our mental and emotional well-being. As Pablo Picasso said, "All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."
